In this series, subjects are depicted in high contrast utilizing compressed charcoal at large scale. Each piece showcases the interplay between direct light and shadow, forcing viewers to directly address the emergent subject. The work is created for illusion, as well. At a distance viewers may mistake the illustrations for photographs. Upon closer inspection, however, viewers see the mark-making and the textural quality of the intuitive drawing style. This interplay is central to the power of the series, a way to illustrate nuance in the relationship between polarities and our own relationship to the dualities in our own lives.
